Public holidays sound like a great idea, until the reality of fitting five days’ worth of work into four hits home. Our eyes had been set on the Kaweka Range for an Easter trip, but in a manic lead up to Good Friday all plans were up in the air. Mat had been organising but had a dickey knee so pulled out. To add fuel to the fire the forecast looking north was looking sub-optimal (i.e. pissing down). During afterwork drinks on Thursday I devised a plan to drag the others to the northern end of the Tararua Range to do a trip I had been thinking about for some time, the Cattle Ridge — Dundas loop. I was almost derailed by the realisation that supermarkets were closed on Good Friday, luckily our work fridge was being cleared out over Easter so I managed pillage the miscellaneous leftovers of my colleagues (including some rather nice homemade chutney) before finally heading home to pack on Thursday night.

Things didn’t get any better when we rolled up to the roadend, which resembled a centre city carpark…
