Where the snow falls
Maungahuka and the Snowy River — Tararua Forest Park
The Tararua Ranges are punctuated by ‘classic’ tramps, routes trodden by trampers over many decades. Of these, the southern and northern crossings are perhaps the most well known, but I would assert that the traverse of the main south range, from Junction Knob to Bridge Peak, is the most spectacular. Add on an off-track excursion into the rugged snowy river and you have a recipe for an unforgettable experience.
1. The waewae express
Ōtaki Forks to Waitewaewae Hut
I picked Emily up from the airport on a clear Saturday morning. She had flown Jetstar so predictably her flight had been delayed by several hours. We cruised through the hectic city traffic, battling our way towards the freedom of the backcountry. With Transmission Gully and the new Ōtaki expressway we made excellent time to the terminus of the Ōtaki Gorge road, getting there by 11am. From here we ladened our packs and schlepped down the road at great pace, soon crossing the slip before marching onward to the swingbridge over the Waiotauru. It was then a hop skip and a jump to the bridge over the Ōtaki.
